Cause of Death

He died from reading too much poetry.

Metaphors cut through his abdomen

like a sword

rhymes rotted his brain

emotions overwhelmed him.

He died of a grief not his own.

The doctors did what they could.

They excised sonnets
but the damage had been done.

He was a lost cause

like a blister they let it burst

the poison spread throughout his system.

His sister could barely recognize him.

Even as a child he had a wan and faraway look.
We hope he found peace at last
in a prosaic heaven
